Shikaak...what?
Hi! I'm Alex Onion. Yes really...Onion.

I'm a proud Chicagoan for many reasons, not the least of which is how the city got its name. While its origins are widely debated, my favorite theory is that "Chicago" comes from the Miami-Illinois word, "Shikaakwa" — roughly translating to "stinky onion." You can see where this is going...

Those stinky onions still line the banks of the Chicago River in some areas, and beyond the obvious alignment with my own name, they also offer an apt metaphor for content marketing.

A great blog is built around topic clusters, or brand pillars that inform each piece of content. Let's call those topic clusters the onion itself.

Beneath each cluster come sub-topic blog posts — or layers of the onion. These posts answer every single question someone might have about that topic.
This type of content marketing strategy makes you a thought leader, offers your customers genuinely helpful resources, and helps you stand out as an authority in search. Oh, and it doesn't cost a cent in advertising dollars. Sounds like a magic bullet, right? Right!
